Storm damage in New Zealand
Locals encouraged to avoid going out as severe gales strike the country.

Powerful gusts attaining speeds of as high as 155km/h (96mph) have left nearly 90,000 homes without power and compelled authorities to call off more than 100 air travel services, according to domestic outlets.

These gusts are influencing the whole South Island and lower areas of the North Island, per the national weather agency.

The nation's agencies have announced rare severe gust advisories - the highest alert level - in core zones including these major districts.

Residents have been advised to remain inside, avoid travel, and get ready for further power and communication outages.

Extensive Damage and Crisis Measures

The power cut seems to be impacting residences mainly in the South Island, although officials say that power was being restored progressively.

Domestic outlets have indicated that in certain areas homes have lost their roofs, while power lines and trees have been knocked down by the winds.

Within the capital, a person was killed after being impacted by a tree branch at a popular trail walking spot on Tuesday.

Meanwhile in Wellington, a female was pushed toward moving cars on a thoroughfare by a powerful blast, in a moment that was captured in a popular vehicle recording.

Air travel to and from the urban area have been halted because of the weather, whereas some roads and libraries are shut down.

At the same time local leaders have declared a state of emergency, to facilitate disaster response efforts.
